As early as January 10, 2023, Microsoft will stop providing technical support and security updates for Windows 7 and 8.1. This marks the debut of Microsoft Edge 109, the final version to support the retiring operating systems, and it takes place in just one week.

Not all browsers have abandoned Windows 7 and 8.1, including Edge. Google stated in October that on February 7th, Chrome would stop supporting Windows 7/8.1. On these devices, both browsers will continue to function, but neither will receive any security updates or new features. On January 10, WebView2, which enables programmers to incorporate web material into their apps, will likewise be retired.

The deadline of next week is too soon for people who still use Windows 7-based computers, which are expected to number approximately 100 million by 2021. To be fair, Microsoft had already made known when Windows 7 and 8 would reach their end of support.

These operating systems will continue to function flawlessly, but users who are unable to update risk exposure to viruses and future security issues. In October of last year, a Lansweeper study of 27 million Windows machines indicated that more PCs were running Windows 7, 8, and XP than Windows 11.

Microsoft informed users in advance that support for Windows 7 would cease in 2020. only those with the additional three-year extended security patch subscription are still eligible for updates.
